Yarn Weights & Crochet Hooks 101

Lesson Summary

There are four videos in this lesson to explain yarn weights, crochet hook sizes, common types of yarn materials, and how they all work together in this course.

If you are enrolled in the course, join the "Let's Get Hooked" Facebook Group here!

Yarn Weights

This is a wonderful graphic from Lion Brand Yarn that demonstrates the various weights of yarn – ranging from super fine weight for socks all the way to large, jumbo weight yarn for thick blankets. Great reference to hold onto.

Crochet Hook Sizes

This is a quick graphic to show you that crochet hooks come in various sizes. You'll find that most range from 2.5mm to 10mm. For this course, we will use the 5mm, 6.5mm, and 8mm hooks.

A quick note on the two types of crochet hooks, in case you go to the store one day and wonder why the heck there are two different types :)

Recap | Yarn Details, Hooks in Course

Let's recap and talk about the yarn and hooks specific for this course.

Common Types of Yarn

  • Acrylic yarn is beloved for its durability and easy care, making it a go-to for projects requiring longevity and frequent washing, such as children's clothing and home décor. Acrylic is machine washable and the most affordable.
  • Cotton yarn is very durable and most commonly used for making household items like dishcloths, trivets, and towels.
  • Polyester yarn stands out for its resilience and resistance to stretching and shrinking, often used in blend with other fibers to enhance the fabric's durability and color retention. Polyester is the type of yarn I use for my amigurumi (Bernat Blanket Yarn is 100% polyester).
  • Wool, valued for its natural warmth and elasticity, is perfect for cozy winter garments and felting projects, offering unparalleled comfort and thermal qualities.

The course primarily uses acrylic, cotton, and polyester yarn types.
